/etc/hostname

/etc/hostname is a plain text file in /etc which contains the name of the host, optionally followed by its domain.

This file is read at host startup and used to set the host's name in the kernel. This name commonly appears in shell prompts and also appears on the login screen for lab computers and VLAB sessions.
