The Network File System @ Wikipedia (NFS) is the distributed file system used in CSE to make users' home directories available on all login, VLAB and lab computers.

It transparently supports Linux-style file system semantics (user, group and other; read, write and execute), a significant benefit for undergraduate students who only need to learn that one set of semantics.
