VMware refers to the technology developed by VMware, Inc., used in CSE to instantiate virtual servers and networks.

CSE uses VMware primarily to create two different types of virtual host:

  • Back-end servers supporting undergraduate teaching (including DHCP, DNS, LDAP and UDB servers), and
  • Computers used by researchers.
